Make A Difference Day is celebrated each year on the 4th Saturday in October. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, it is the nation’s largest day of volunteering, thanks to the passion of millions of people like you. Together with long-standing partner HandsOn Network, the generosity of Newman’s Own and hundreds of carrier newspapers, USA WEEKEND rallies millions in a single day to help change the world.
Each year Altrusa International of Waynesville selects one or more projects to work on for Make A Difference Day - these projects range from collecting supplies for troops overseas, helping package food for Meals on Wheels, collecting donations for a local women's shelter, volunteering in the schools, working with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering in the local soup kitchen and more.

On Saturday, Oct 24, 2015, volunteers from the Waynesville Altrusa club gathered at Hazelwood Elementary School to work with Haywood Waterways in cleaning up the very neglected rain garden. As Steve Brinson from Haywood Waterways explained, the rain garden was put in about 15 years ago to aid in the run-off from the school building, turning the area from a swamp to useable space for the kids. A small playground is next to it, plus a wonderful working vegetable garden! Each year volunteers from the Master Gardener’s Extension Association help the children plant, maintain and harvest wonderful food. At the end of the season, they hold a “harvest party” where the children and volunteers share the food grown over the summer.

On October 26, 2013, Altrusa of Waynesville coordinated a workday on a local Habitat for Humanity home site.
Members made lunches to bring to the workers and a crew of Altrusans signed up to work at the home site.
Since 1990, Haywood Habitat for Humanity has been building affordable housing in the county. As an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, we are committed to eliminating poverty housing in the community and to helping needy families realize their dream of home ownership.
